The Challenge at Manele

The Challenge at Manele is a visually stunning golf course that is painted a rainbow of colors from black lava outcroppings to red cliffs that tumble towards the blue sea to the pristine white sand traps that dot the lush green coastline. The course plays high above the crashing waves of Hulopoe Bay, featuring three holes that play along 200-foot cliffs with the Pacific Ocean as a hazard. This Jack Nicklaus-designed course has a target-style layout that forces golfers to remain sharp and slice-free. The golf course has an interesting variety of short par 4s, testing par 5s, and a total of nine doglegs. Thanks to its seaside location, the course's routing is dictated by the prevailing winds. The Challenge at Manele's signature hole is the 12th, notoriously known for the demanding carry it requires across 200 yards of churning waves.

Hawaii Golf Trail

The day begins at the Honolulu Airport  where you will be met by a Hawaii Golf Trail representative to assist checking in. Once through security and aboard the plane, enjoy a scenic 40 minute flight to Lānaʻi. Relax knowing you are on the way to play two of the top-5 courses in Hawaii according to Golf Digest. You will fly over beautiful Diamond Head and across the Ka'iwi channel. Passing by Moloka'i you will see its tremendous sea cliffs and rugged terrain.  Lānaʻi was once a pineapple plantation and this landscape dominates your view as the plane makes its final approach. The island was purchased in 1985 by Castle & Cook, owners of Dole. It remained under the control of David Murdoch until 2012 when Larry Ellison, CEO of Oracle Corporation acquired 98% intrest of the island. Mr. Ellison plans to turn the island into a model of sustainability.

Lānaʻi is home to two golf courses, one at each Four Seasons resort. "The Challenge at Manele" borders the ocean and was designed by Jack Nicklaus. "The Experience at Koele" is located in the mountains of Lānaʻi and was designed by Greg Norman. Bill Gates was married on the 12th hole tee-box at The Challenge at Manele. "Shipwreck Beach" on the north shore of the island is so named because of the remains of a wrecked vessel aground a short distance offshore. This is popularly referred to as a WW II Liberty Ship, although its hull shape is nothing like one; it is most likely one of a few ferrocement cargo ships built during the war.

Upon arrival in Lānaʻi, you will be met and transported to your chosen golf course by our local Hawaii Golf Trail representative. Decide if you want to warm up a bit or head straight out to the tee. A cart will be awaitng your arrival.  Next, relax and enjoy your round. The Experience at Koele

Chiseled from the mountains, the front nine holes of the Experience at Koele run through old pineapple fields and deep valley gorges laced with kiawe trees and rare, regal koa. The back nine wind past pine cathedrals and thickets of eucalyptus, with untrammeled views of neighboring Maui and Molokai rising from the sea, and deliver a staggering finish: a 250-foot drop from the signature seventeenth hole to the deepest ravine on Lānaʻi.

In designing the 7,014-yard, par 72 championship course, Greg Norman and Ted Robinson sought to conserve as many native plants as possible while creating a battlefield worthy of golf aficionados. As legions of discerning golfers have discovered, playing a round at the Experience at Koele ensures you will take home bragging rights, regardless of your score.
